Fleet Management for Car Sharing Platforms

How telematics enables car sharing operations with vehicle access control, trip tracking, damage detection, and automated billing data collection.

Car sharing platforms depend on telematics for their core operational model. Unlike traditional fleet management where the primary goal is monitoring known drivers in company vehicles, car sharing must handle unknown, rotating users accessing vehicles on demand, with full accountability for each trip. The Plug5 OBD-II tracker is particularly suited for car sharing because of its zero-installation design and comprehensive data collection. When a user starts a trip, the system records: trip start time and location, odometer reading, fuel/charge level, and a continuous GPS track of the journey. During the trip, driving behavior data (speed, acceleration, braking) is monitored for insurance and damage liability purposes. At trip end, the same parameters are recorded, enabling automatic billing based on time, distance, or a combination. Vehicle access control integration adds another layer. BLE-based locks and immobilizers can be triggered through the tracking platform, allowing or denying vehicle access based on reservation status, user verification, and payment confirmation. Damage detection through accelerometer data helps identify when during a rental period impact damage occurred, attributing responsibility to the correct user. For fleet operators running car sharing services, telematics is not an optional add-on but the fundamental technology infrastructure that makes the business model possible.
