Smart Tachograph Gen 2: What Fleet Operators Need to Know

The EU smart tachograph generation 2 requirements, key changes from Gen 1, retrofit deadlines, and how to prepare your fleet for compliance.

The European Union's smart tachograph Gen 2 regulation represents the most significant update to tachograph requirements in over a decade. Mandated for all new vehicles above 3.5 tonnes registered from August 2023, with retrofit requirements phasing in through 2025-2026, it introduces capabilities that directly affect fleet operations and telematics integration. Key Gen 2 changes include: automatic recording of border crossings using GNSS position data (replacing manual country entry), recording of loading and unloading activities, enhanced security with a new motion sensor, DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication) for roadside enforcement checks without stopping, and an interface for ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) applications. The GNSS recording is particularly impactful because it creates an independent position record that can be cross-referenced with GPS tracker data. For fleet operators, preparation involves several steps. Ensure your fleet management platform can process Gen 2 tachograph data files, which have a different format than Gen 1. Verify that your remote download solution (via the Ruptela HCV5 or Pro5 tacho harness) supports the Gen 2 download protocol. Train drivers on the new manual entry requirements for loading/unloading activities. And review your compliance processes to incorporate the additional data fields that Gen 2 records provide.
