Vehicle Immobilization: Remote Security for Your Fleet

How remote vehicle immobilization works, when to use it, and the safety features that prevent dangerous misuse in fleet management applications.

Remote vehicle immobilization allows fleet managers to disable a vehicle's ignition circuit remotely through the fleet management platform. When activated, the ignition block relay connected to the Ruptela tracker cuts the starter circuit, preventing the engine from being started. This capability serves as a powerful anti-theft and unauthorized use deterrent. Safety is the primary design consideration for immobilization systems. Responsible implementations include critical safeguards: the relay only engages when the vehicle is stationary (never while driving), the command requires explicit authorization in the fleet management system, and the driver is notified before immobilization takes effect. These protections prevent the dangerous scenario of a vehicle being disabled while in traffic. Common use cases include: stolen vehicle recovery (disable the vehicle once located by authorities), unauthorized use prevention (immobilize vehicles outside approved hours or geofences), lease/rental enforcement (disable vehicles when payments are overdue, after appropriate legal process), and site security (ensure all vehicles are immobilized when the depot is closed). The Ignition Block Relay accessory connects to the Ruptela tracker's digital output, making the immobilization function available for any device in the lineup that supports digital outputs.
